If you want to improve the vitality of your skin, you may have heard that chemical peels are a great choice. Chemical peels come in many shapes and forms, and you need to work with an expert who can help you decide which chemical peel is right for your needs. For example, you may be able to use a chemical peel to address acne, or you might be interested in chemical peels that can help you get rid of fine lines and wrinkles.
At Babcock Dermatology, we want to help you decide which treatment plan is best for your needs, so learn more about chemical peels below. Then, give us a call to schedule an appointment.
How Does a Chemical Peel Work?
A chemical peel uses the unique components of a chemical solution to help you improve the appearance of your skin. During this treatment process, we will apply the right chemical solution to your skin. The goal is to change, alter, or remove one or more layers of your skin.
Then, we will remove the top layer of your skin, revealing more youthful, fresh, and healthy skin underneath. Generally, younger skin has fewer fine lines, wrinkles, and scars. Younger skin usually has a more even color and a brighter complexion, providing you with the results you are looking for.
How Can a Chemical Peel Benefit You?
There are plenty of reasons why we might use a chemical peel to help you improve your appearance. Some of the ways that we may be able to use a chemical peel to benefit you include:
- You might have fine lines around your nose, eyes, or mouth that you would like to remove.
- You may have acne that you would like us to address.
- There might be some mild scars on your skin that you would like to get rid of.
- You may have freckles, age spots, or sunspots that you would like us to address.
- There might be an uneven skin tone or color that needs to be smoothed out.
- You might have scaly patches or rough patches of skin that you would like to remove.
- There might also be some dark patches, called melasma, that we may be able to remove using chemical peels.
At Babcock Dermatology, we have a variety of options available, and we can customize the chemical peel to meet your needs. When you arrive for your appointment, we will work with you to help you figure out which chemical peel is right for your goals.
Can Everyone Benefit From Chemical Peels?
Chemical peels are incredibly versatile, and they can be used to address a variety of issues with your skin; however, not everyone is a candidate for a chemical peel. For example, if you have extra coloring on your skin, spend a tremendous amount of time in the sun, take medications that impact your skin, or have a history of skin scarring, then chemical peels might not be for you.
How Do You Prepare for a Chemical Peel?
If you decide to move forward with a chemical peel, there are a few steps you need to follow. Some of the most important things you need to do to prepare include:
- Try to limit your direct sun exposure for 2 weeks prior to your treatment date. You also need to avoid tanning beds.
- You should also try to avoid putting any topical products on your skin before the chemical peel.
- If you have any products that contain retinoids, you need to avoid them for two weeks prior to treatment.
- You cannot have any open sores or lesions on the surface of your skin when the treatment takes place.
- If you have oral antibiotics or antiviral medications, try to avoid taking them for 24 hours before your appointment. If you cannot do so, we may need to reschedule your visit.
Depending on the exact reason why you are getting a chemical peel, we may provide you with some additional instructions as well. If you would like to learn more about how chemical peels can help you reach your goals, give us a call to schedule an appointment.
